We Source NYC Industry Network

The We Source NYC Industry Network seeks to connect offshore wind Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), Tier 1 and Tier 2 entities to small- and medium-sized industrial businesses in New York City.

NYCEDC is now inviting OEMs, Tier 1 and Tier 2 entities in the offshore wind industry to apply to the We Source NYC Industry Network.

Through the We Source NYC Industry Network, NYCEDC aims to accomplish the following objectives:

• Create a mechanism for offshore wind OEMs, Tier 1 and Tier 2 supply chain stakeholders to more easily identify local suppliers
• Develop a reliable and useful business-facing information channel to enable local suppliers to participate in emerging offshore wind supply chains
• Establish NYCEDC industrial business development programming that aligns with industry needs and market trends

Supply Chain Opportunity for Local Suppliers

The emerging offshore wind industry is expected to generate unprecedented economic opportunity for industrial businesses. The global OSW supply chain is expected to enable demand for 4 to 5 GW of US-based offshore wind electricity every year from 2026-2035. To this end, supply chain actors will need to invest $6.5 billion annually to produce the wind turbines alone. This industrial business activity will generate and sustain new jobs in the renewable energy sector. Through 2040, New York State projects the offshore wind industry will generate up to 23,000 new jobs, with six out of 10 of those jobs in the manufacturing and construction phases of OSW development.

Local industrial businesses in New York City are well-positioned to benefit from and enter emerging OSW supply chains. While it is expected that the demand for major OSW components—e.g., blades, nacelles, towers, foundations, transition pieces, cables, etc.—will be met by large-scale supply chain stakeholders such as international original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and other tier 1 and 2 suppliers, local suppliers will have considerable opportunity to produce and provide standard and intermediate goods and services that are required for OSW developments. These components are anticipated to include secondary steel components like internal platforms, ladders, railings, door frames, doors, sea fastenings, cable trays, control boards, and much more.

NYCEDC is committed to supporting local suppliers’ ability to access contract opportunities in the offshore wind industry. NYCEDC has identified nine manufacturing subsectors that are most relevant to OSW supply chain stakeholders and are composed of approximately 830 New York City-based businesses that provide 14,000 jobs. In the spring of 2023, NYCEDC set out to connect and survey these businesses to spread awareness about the emerging economic opportunities in the OSW industry and to garner information about local supply chain capabilities. NYCEDC successfully connected with over 200 industrial businesses—manufacturers, construction service providers, and equipment suppliers—that expressed their interest in working with major supply chain stakeholders to secure opportunities in the regional OSW supply chain.

NYCEDC now seeks to connect major contracting entities with local suppliers to enable OSW development, generate meaningful local economic impact, and meet our state and federal climate goals.
