A New Space for Artists on the Lower East Side

ABC No Rio is a nonprofit, collectively run social center and performance space for art and activism that facilitates cross-pollination between artists and activists.

NYCEDC is leading the effort to construct a new four-story core-and-shell building for ABC No Rio at 156 Rivington Street on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. The new building will offer:

  • A first floor and basement dedicated to exhibition spaces
  • A rear gallery on the first floor that can be closed off as a meeting room or theater
  • Operable skylights and a roof garden
  • Studios and staff offices on the upper levels

Built for Sustainability

The building also rigorously adheres to LEED Silver and Passive House standards for energy efficiency, with features including:

  • A super-insulated thermal envelope
  • High performance windows
  • Robust air sealing
  • Energy recovery ventilation and heating
  • Passive heating/shading
  • High-efficiency lighting and appliances
