New York City’s annual celebration of design will run from May 10-22, 2019

Hundreds of thousands of attendees participated in NYCxDESIGN 2018 events, adding value of $84.59 million to City’s local economy

NEW YORK, NY—New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) today announced that the City’s seventh annual NYCxDESIGN celebration will run from May 10-22, 2019. The citywide annual celebration of design unites culture, education, and entertainment with a wide array of programming, including exhibitions, installations, trade shows, talks, open studios, and more.

“NYCxDESIGN 2018 again showcased the best of New York City’s design industry,” said NYCEDC President and CEO James Patchett. “This year’s celebration attracted over 336,000 attendees and contributed to the City’s economy through hiring, visitor expenditure and more. We look forward what’s in store for NYCxDESIGN 2019!”

NYCxDESIGN 2018 hosted 336,000+ visitors, including 144,000 first-time attendees—32,000 more than last year. Approximately 1,500 part-time employees were hired to support more than 360 NYCxDESIGN events. Attendees supported hundreds of events throughout the five boroughs, such as the Design Pavilion in Times Square, the third annual NYCxDESIGN Awards, and International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF).

“Being a hub for NYCxDESIGN and hosting Design Pavilion for the past two years reflects our ongoing commitment to nurturing innovative design in Times Square; we are and want to continue to be a center of creativity in the same way that NYCxDESIGN has been the center of New York City's commitment to promote design and great designers,” said Tim Tompkins, President of Times Square Alliance. “This year we premiered Times Square Design Lab, which commissioned New York City designers to experiment with design solutions for one of the most populated and well-known public spaces in the world.”

The third annual NYCxDESIGN Awards, presented by Interior Design magazine and ICFF, consisted of companies and design leaders who excelled in such design fields as urban design, fashion, architecture, technology, public space projects, and more. Visit Interior Design magazine’s website for a list of this year’s winners.

“We proudly launched the NYCxDESIGN Awards partnering with ICFF to celebrate our beloved city and showcase New York City’s best and brightest—that are literally bursting from every borough” proclaims Interior Design Editor in Chief, Cindy Allen. “Product and project entries came from over 25 different countries and all five boroughs... with over 350 manufacturers and 180 firms submitting: a perfect combination of global design meeting our own home town. This year submissions were judged by an all-star jury including David Rockwell (Rockwell Group), Calvin Tsao (Tsao & McKown), and Kai-Uwe Bergman (BIG). The best design from the best designed city in the world? You betcha!”

The 30th edition of the ICFF exhibition experienced double-digit growth, and attending architects, designers, developers, and luxury retailers reported very favorably about all the new releases, additions, and features.

“Each edition of NYCxDESIGN sees this colossal citywide design celebration get bigger, more exciting, and more cohesive. It has become a powerful magnet, drawing many thousands more design professionals and enthusiasts each year. ICFF feels the positive impact of NYCxDESIGN as ever greater numbers crowd the aisles of the Fair from all over the region, the country and internationally,” said Kevin O’Keefe, ICFF Event Director.

Based on economic research conducted by NYCEDC, New York City is home to over 8,015 design establishments employing 53,167 people. On average, those employed in the design sector earned $104,766 a year.
