NYCEDC Summer Internship Program FAQs

General

How long is the summer internship program and how is it structured?
Internships can last between 10 to 12 weeks, depending on individual schedules. Each intern will be assigned to a department which determines the projects they will work on and will be offered weekly engagement and networking opportunities to make the most of this experience.

How many interns are selected for the program each year?
The exact number varies, but we typically welcome around 30 interns each summer.

Does NYCEDC offer internships during the school year (i.e., fall and spring semesters)?
No, we currently do not offer placements outside of our structured summer program. Please refer to our Fellowship programs or full-time roles for opportunities throughout the calendar year.

What types of opportunities are there?
Internships are offered across all areas of our business, including Asset Management & Real Estate, Design & Construction, Economic Research, External Affairs, Finance, Human Resources & Administration, Information Technology, Legal & Compliance, Strategy & Innovation, Urban Planning, Workforce Development, and more. See our Careers page for the complete list of intern openings once the applications go live in October.

Where are the internship opportunities located? Will I have to relocate?
NYCEDC's offices are based in New York City at One Liberty Plaza in Lower Manhattan. While full-time hires are expected to have NYC-residency, interns do not have to meet that requirement; you can commute in from the tristate area if needed. NYCEDC is unable to provide relocation assistance to any hires at this time.

Are there flexible work options?
Our internship requires interns to be in the office three days a week to enhance collaboration and networking. Remote work may be permitted on other days, depending on departmental needs and arrangements with your manager.

What is NYCEDC’s dress code?
While NYCEDC follows a smart casual dress code, interns are still expected to dress according to the formality of their meetings and day-to-day business.

Eligibility

What qualifications do you look for in candidates?
Specific qualifications vary across jobs and are included in specific job postings. In general, we’re looking for a motivated self-starter—a candidate who wants to make a difference in NYC neighborhoods, is excited by emerging industries and business opportunities, has a passion for the built environment, etc. While team culture may vary by department, NYCEDC’s overall culture is built on collaboration, teamwork, and a shared commitment to our mission. We thrive on the fast-paced nature of our projects and are excited to welcome interns who share that enthusiasm!

Are there GPA or major requirements for internship eligibility?
No specific GPA or major requirements are set for eligibility. We consider the whole application, including your experiences, skills, and interest in the role. Each department may look for a certain skill set or background relevant to the work they do, which will be detailed in the job postings.

Who can apply for internships?
Our intern positions are open to undergraduate students, graduate students, and recent graduates!

Are international students eligible for internships?
Yes, international students with a valid F-1 visa for the internship duration are eligible to apply. Students who have off-campus work authorization through CPT, OPT, or STEM-OPT are also eligible.

Application Process

When do internship applications open?
Our applications usually go live in October.

What is the application and interview process like?
The application process starts with an online application. If your candidacy is of interest to our hiring teams, a recruiter will contact you for a preliminary screening interview in December where we’ll assess your academic and professional background and interest in the internship position. Following those preliminary conversations, we make the best determination for who is invited back to department-led interviews in January. The department-led interviews are our intern “Superdays,” where you will participate in a panel-style interview(s) with different team members who you would work closely with throughout your summer internship.

Can I apply to more than one department?
Yes, you can apply to as many departments that are of interest to you. We recommend tailoring your resume and cover letter for each position.

What materials do I need to submit?
All intern positions require submission of a resume and cover letter. There will be an option to submit supplemental materials of your choosing (e.g., a writing sample or a portfolio sample).

When can I expect a recruiter to get back to me about my status after applying?
For more details on timeline expectations, please review our application timeline.

Program Experience

What types of projects or tasks will I be working on?
Interns may work on a variety of projects that align with their field of study or career interests. These can include research, supporting ongoing projects, or contributing to team meetings and presentations. Examples of past intern projects include: participating in roundtables, conducting Building Conditions Assessments, working on the Rent Credit Approval Process, researching City Council bills, creating maps and performing spatial analysis, developing an energy data dashboard, conducting financial analysis, assisting with requests for proposals, and more!

What types of training will I receive during the internship?
Apart from a formal first-day Intern orientation, we organize weekly “EDC 101” seminars for our interns! These sessions provide interns with the chance to hear directly from each department, gain insights into their responsibilities and projects, and see how interdepartmental collaboration happens at NYCEDC.

What type of mentorship will I receive during the internship?
Interns will receive mentorship from their direct manager (who might have been a former intern)!

What types of networking opportunities will I receive during the internship?
NYCEDC interns are also invited to company-wide events (e.g., townhalls, summer outings, etc.) to meet colleagues from across the organization.

How can I make the most of my internship experience at NYCEDC?
Stay curious and proactive! NYCEDC values initiative, so don’t hesitate to ask questions, request feedback, and express your interests to your manager. Attending seminars and events, engaging with other departments, and networking with colleagues across teams are great ways to maximize your experience.

Post-Internship

Is there a possibility of a full-time job offer after completing the internship?
Our summer internship program is designed as a pipeline to full-time employment, and high-performing interns may receive job offers. This is not guaranteed, however, and is dependent on a role being open and available for an intern upon the program’s end date.

Will I receive feedback on my performance?
Yes, all interns participate in a formal review process and are expected to meet regularly with their manager to understand their strengths and areas of improvement.

How do you stay in touch with intern alumni after the program?
Interns are added to our broader Talent Community and receive quarterly newsletters to be the first in the know on all the latest news, job openings, and employee benefits. We also have an active alumni network on LinkedIn.
