Gansevoort Square will deliver needed mixed-income housing, an expansion of the Whitney Museum, an enhanced High Line maintenance and operations facility, as well as open space, and cement the Meatpacking District as a global destination and economic engine for the city.

In October 2024, former mayor Adams released a new vision to transform an approximately 66,000-square-foot lot in the heart of the Meatpacking District into a 24/7 live, learn, work, and play community and cultural hub for New Yorkers. Known as Gansevoort Square, this vision will build upon the success of the Meatpacking District and reimagine the site as a one-of-a-kind destination for New Yorkers, with mixed-income housing, new open space, and the opportunity to expand the Whitney Museum of American Art and the High Line maintenance operations facility—two of the city’s most iconic cultural institutions.

Delivering Mixed-Income Housing

After a competitive RFP process, Gansevoort Square Partners, a joint venture of Douglaston Development and Kinwood Partners, have been selected to build 590 units of high-quality, mixed-income housing and to activate the ground floor with vibrant community and retail space, both of which will be located on the residential site of Gansevoort Square. The developers will exceed the affordable housing goal of 50 percent permanently affordable units stated in the Request for Proposals—with up to 55 percent of total units as permanently affordable without using City subsidy funding.

Whitney Museum Expansion

The vision includes the opportunity to expand the Whitney Museum for American Art, with additional gallery, education, and learning facilities to enhance the Museum’s longstanding commitment to making art, culture, and arts education accessible to wider and more diverse audiences.

Enhancing the High Line

The High Line will build out its maintenance and operations space to support the evolving challenges and future opportunities of increased visitation and year-round programming.

Building Much-Needed Open Space

Gansevoort Square will include a new, 11,200-square-foot open space.
