Robert R. Douglass Bridge
A permanent replacement for the Rector Street Pedestrian Bridge, the Robert R. Douglass Bridge provides a direct pedestrian connection to Battery Park City from the Financial District.
A Point of Connection
NYCEDC, in coordination with Thornton Tomasetti/Weidlinger Associates, WXY Architects + Urban Design, and Skanska designed and constructed a new pedestrian bridge over West Street at West Thames Street. The Robert R. Douglass Bridge spans 230 feet across West Street, replacing the Rector Street Pedestrian Bridge and providing a permanent, direct pedestrian connection from the Financial District to Battery Park City. The $45 million project was funded by the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation and the Battery Park City Authority.
The Rector Street Pedestrian Bridge was an interim pedestrian crossing over West Street in Lower Manhattan that was installed as a temporary replacement to existing bridges damaged or destroyed in the attacks on September 11, 2001.
The Robert R. Douglass Bridge opened to the public in September 2019, and was dedicated in June 2021.
