NYCEDC is replacing and relocating the Hunter’s Point South landing.

The new ferry landing will be constructed to improve the long-term resiliency of ferry service at Hunter’s Point South and to provide reliable service to the community for years to come.

The new landing will be located about 200 feet north of the existing landing, situated parallel to the concessionaire area and the Oval.

Next Steps

  • 75% Design (completed)
  • Permitting and environmental review (ongoing)
  • 100% design submission by fall 2026
  • Construction starts winter 2027
  • Landing in service by summer/fall 2027

Alternative Location Analysis Study

NYCEDC completed an alternatives analysis study to identify a new location and design for the Hunter's Point South Ferry landing.

The Alternatives Analysis Study evaluated and compared selected sites with considerations of the following factors that influence the design, construction, and implementation of a ferry landing:

  • Community feedback
  • Permitting and permissions
  • Physical access
  • Engineering challenges
  • Constructability
  • Ability to provide reliable and safe operations
  • Costs and schedule
  • Maintenance needs and asset management

A summary of the study results are available for download.

The Need for a New Site

The Hunter's Point South Ferry landing supports some of the highest ridership in the entire system, with an average ridership growth of about 33% since 2019. There is a substantial demand for ferry service in this area particularly among weekday commuters and it is popular as a recreational destination on weekends.

However, the Hunter's Point South landing is one of the oldest in the system (predating NYC Ferry). It is nearing the end of its useful life and must be replaced. A standard ferry landing design cannot be built in the current location due to the interference with train tunnels underneath. If no action is taken, the ferry service in this area will have to be discontinued within a few years. To ensure the continued availability of this increasingly popular and essential service for years to come, NYCEDC is partnering with McLaren Engineering to evaluate potential sites and designs for the new ferry landing.

What sites are under consideration?

Site A was initially proposed by EDC; sites B, C and D were identified in consultation with community stakeholders in January 2023 during a walking tour with Council Member Won, Hunter's Point Park Conservancy, and members of Queens Community Board 2.
