The Resilient Energy Studio is a program designed to catalyze the safe deployment of energy storage systems (ESS) in NYC by equipping startups with the technical and regulatory support needed to navigate real-world deployment challenges.
The studio provides startups with hands-on assistance and access to key NYC stakeholders, to help startups bring their solutions to market safely and efficiently, and generate insights to inform broader regulatory reform. Programming includes:
- Office hours with the NYC Fire Department (FDNY) and NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) to provide regulatory guidance
- Workshops with experts on fire safety, interconnection, and other implementation issues
- Peer learning sessions for teams to share updates, discuss challenges, and develop strategies
- Industry convenings with a broad range of stakeholders to discuss pressing industry issues
Since the Studio’s inception, 12 energy storage companies have participated in the program. In one of the previous cohorts, ElectricFish, installed their containerized battery storage-integrated DC Fast Charger, to expedite access to public charging and local grid resiliency at Floyd Bennett Field.
Current Cohort
The current cohort of the Resilient Energy Studio is focused on accelerating the pace of deployment of batteries at the building-scale. There is untapped potential for batteries to help buildings comply with LL97, reduce electricity costs, and provide greater operational resilience.
These five companies are participating in the current cohort of the Resilient Energy Studio:
- Ashlawn Energy plans to deploy their vanadium redox flow battery in the garage of a 112-unit, 12-story residential building in Brooklyn.
- FlowCellutions will collaborate with Ashlawn Energy to integrate its battery diagnostics platform into their upcoming NYC deployment—providing predictive insights, forecasting degradation, and enabling safer, longer deployments.
- Strobe Power is partnering with a telecommunications site on Staten Island to provide energy asset aggregation and optimization that allows market participation for its hybrid battery backup solution.
- Novele is demonstrating its intelligent battery and demand-management platform at the Brooklyn Navy Yard—as one of the first permitted indoor, building-scale energy storage installations in NYC.
- Moment Energy plans to repurpose EV batteries into a stationary battery energy storage system for a multifamily residential building in the Bronx, providing residents with clean, affordable, and reliable backup power and strengthening the community’s energy resilience.
Why Energy Storage in NYC
Energy storage captures and stores electricity for use at a later time. It is critical to decarbonizing NYC’s built environment and strengthening the electricity grid. There are many economic, social, and environment benefits of energy storage:
- Health: Improves air quality by replacing dependency on highly-pollutive peaker plants
- Affordability: Lowers electricity costs by smoothing the balance between supply and demand for energy
- Resiliency: Makes the electric grid more reliable and resilient—reducing the chance of electricity disruptions
- Environmental: Enables the use of intermittent clean energy sources
The deployment of safe battery energy storage is critical to achieving the City’s carbon reduction targets, including NYC’s goal to add 500 MW by 2025 and New York State’s goal of 6GW by 2030. The growth of the industry advances the City’s Green Economy Action Plan, which calls on NYCEDC to mobilize the NYC Industrial Development Agency (NYCIDA) to deploy tax incentives to support battery energy storage and other green economy uses.
