Rebuilding Futures Program FAQs

Who is eligible for NYCEDC’s returnship program?
The program is designed for individuals who have at least five years of prior full-time work experience who have taken a career break for at least 18 months and are looking to re-enter the workforce.

Are current or recent NYCEDC interns or fellows eligible to apply?
Interns or fellows who are currently working at NYCEDC or recently completed a program and have not had a gap of at least 18 months in full-time employment are not eligible for the returnship. This program is specifically tailored for individuals re-entering the workforce after an extended absence.

I took time off for graduate school. Am I eligible?
If you recently completed graduate school and are re-entering the workforce after at least an 18-month period away from full-time employment, you may be eligible. We evaluate each application holistically. If your graduate studies were part of a larger career transition or break, we encourage you to apply.

What if I’ve had part-time or freelance work during my career break?
You would be eligible as many returners engage in part-time work, consulting, or freelance projects during their time away from full-time employment. As long as you’ve had a gap of at least 18 months from full-time, permanent work, you are welcome to apply.

Do I need experience in a specific industry to apply?
For the 2027 Session, we are currently looking for applicants with prior experience in fields like human resources, public relations, communications, journalism, political science, public policy, urban studies, sociology, digital content, marketing, business administration, or business management. We also value transferable skills, so if you’re unsure please review the preferred qualifications in the application.

Will NYCEDC host returners in other business functions?
Future program iterations may involve other business functions—including but not limited to infrastructure, real estate, planning, community engagement, and more. If you don’t see a returnship opening that is right for you, please submit your information to stay updated on future sessions.

Is this a paid program?
Yes. The Rebuilding Futures Program is a paid, full-time opportunity, and includes a salary and benefits package for the six-month duration.

Is there potential for full-time employment after the program?
Yes. While full-time employment is not guaranteed, many returners are considered for open roles across NYCEDC based on performance, background and skillset, business needs, and interest.

Do I need to live in New York City to apply?
No, you do not need to currently live in New York City to apply for the Rebuilding Futures Returnship Program. However, the program follows a hybrid work model, and participants are expected to work in-person at NYCEDC’s office in New York City for three days per week.

Do I need to comply with the NYC residency requirement if I am hired as a returner?
No. NYC residency is not required during the six-month returnship program. However, if you are offered and accept a full-time position at NYCEDC following the program, you will be required to provide proof of NYC residency within 180 days of hire, in accordance with the organization’s NYC residency requirement policy.

I've been out of the workforce for more than 10 years. Can I still apply?
Yes. We welcome professionals who have been out for a longer period. If you have at least five years of prior professional experience and are ready to return to work, we encourage you to apply.

What support will I receive during the program?
NYCEDC will be partnering with reacHIRE to provide the following support to Returners:

  • A virtual reimmersion week prior to starting with NYCEDC teams
  • Six guided workshops covering topics like, “Navigating New Teams” and “Negotiating for Success”
  • Six virtual 1:1 coaching sessions
  • 24/7 access to reacHIRE’s Aurora Platform—a one-stop shop for on-demand resources, curricula, peer support, and goal tracking

Can I apply if I have a nontraditional career path?
Yes. We value diverse career journeys and transferable skills. If you have relevant experience and a strong interest in NYCEDC’s mission, we encourage you to apply — even if your career path doesn’t follow a traditional trajectory.

What happens at the end of the returnship?
You’ll receive feedback and support to explore full-time opportunities at NYCEDC. While full-time employment is not guaranteed, high-performing returners may be considered for open roles aligned with their skills and interests.

Do you offer visa sponsorship for the program?
NYCEDC does not offer visa sponsorship for participants in the Rebuilding Futures returnship program. Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States for the entire duration of the six-month program without the need for sponsorship.
