Bloomingdale Library
NYCEDC, The New York Public Library, and the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) are partnering to redevelop the site of the Bloomingdale Library at 150 West 100th Street. This project is part of the City’s “Living Libraries” initiative, which reimagines public library sites as hubs for housing and library services to create stronger, healthier communities. Enhanced by the recently adopted City of Yes for Housing Opportunity zoning changes, this model allows the City to replace outdated buildings and deliver new housing.
Site History
Bloomingdale Library has served as a cornerstone of the Upper West Side community for more than a century. Originally opened on June 3, 1896, as part of the New York Free Circulating Library system, it became part of the NYPL system in 1901. In 1960, the library moved one block east into a new two-story modern building at its present-day location.
A New Vision
This will be the third project of its kind for The New York Public Library. It will give the community:
- A new state-of-the-art library
- Much-needed affordable housing
- A new community hub that supports learning, housing stability, and long-term neighborhood growth
DOHMH facilities may be delivered in a new location.
The final vision will be shaped by a competitive Request for Proposals (RFP) process, inviting developers to submit proposals that align with community priorities and City goals. The RFP is set to be released in the fall of 2025.
Your Community, Your Voice
As we plan for the future of the Bloomingdale Library site, we want to hear from you. NYCEDC and NYPL are launching a community survey to gather input on what residents would like to see at the new library and the overall development.
Your feedback will help shape the design, services, and priorities for this important neighborhood project.
