Meet the NYC Venture Capital Internship Alumni: Udayveer Sekhon
Hi! My name is Uday Sekhon, and I’m currently a rising junior majoring in finance at Baruch College with a minor in political science. This summer, I’m interning at Loeb.nyc, a venture collective that builds and invests in early-stage startups across a wide range of industries, from consumer to healthcare to marketing.
At Loeb, I’ve had the unique opportunity to work directly under the Chief of Staff to Michael Loeb, co-founder & CEO of Loeb.nyc. It’s a high-exposure role that’s given me insight into the inner workings of a venture firm from a strategic and operational perspective. I support cross-functional initiatives, help with internal communications and research, and assist in preparing materials for key meetings and events. At work, no two days look the same, and that’s what I love most about it.
Some days I’m diving into research or helping build internal documents that support firm-wide operations. Other times, I’m involved in preparing agendas, supporting high-level planning, or coordinating with teams across different departments. Earlier this summer, I also had the chance to sit in on a high-level meeting alongside Michael Loeb and Rich Vogel, Loeb.nyc’s co-founders & CFO and COO, respectively, an experience that gave me a firsthand look at executive decision-making in real time.
In addition, I’ve been collaborating with a group of interns on developing a sports betting startup pitch, which we’ll be presenting directly to Michael and Rich at the end of the summer. This project has been an exciting opportunity to combine entrepreneurial thinking with practical execution, as we’ve worked through market research, business model design, and go-to-market strategy under tight deadlines.
One of the most memorable experiences was Internatopia, a three-day off-site in the Hamptons that brought together all of Loeb’s summer interns, a handful of Loeb team members, and guest speakers from across the startup and venture ecosystem. Interns came from schools like Amherst, CUNY, UConn, UChicago and more, and the days were filled with learning, networking, and great conversation. It was a great way to build community and set the tone for the summer.
We also had group meetings with CEOs from several Loeb-backed companies, including Wes Schroll of Fetch Rewards, Bobby Brannigan of Mercato, and Julie Kennedy of Rubywell. During these sessions, we got to ask questions and hear directly about their growth journeys and the challenges they’re tackling, an invaluable real-world perspective.
This summer, I was also selected as one of 23 students to join the inaugural NYC VC Internship Program, a highly selective venture capital training initiative backed by NYCEDC, CUNY, Supermomos, and leading VC firms. As part of the program, I participated in a week-long, in-person VC bootcamp at Amazon’s Bryant Park office, where partners from top firms like Everywhere Ventures, Insight Partners, Picus Capital and more taught us everything from sourcing deals to diligence and portfolio management. One highlight was visiting VC firms
including Union Square Ventures, NEA, and Insight Partners, where we met their teams and got an inside look at how major VCs operate.
These experiences have helped me sharpen both soft skills and strategic thinking. I’ve learned how to navigate fast-paced environments, communicate clearly across teams, and manage priorities when everything feels urgent. Working closely with someone who reports directly to Michael Loeb has taught me how to think several steps ahead and operate with structure and intentionality.
If I could give advice to another NYC student thinking about applying to this program, I’d say: take initiative and stay curious. You don’t need to have all the answers, but you do need to be willing to learn, ask questions, and take ownership of your work. That mindset will make all the difference.
This summer at Loeb.nyc has been one of the most valuable and eye-opening experiences I’ve had so far. It’s given me a clearer sense of the environments where I thrive and the kind of professional I want to become.
