Jun 16 2014

Program Provides Mentorship and Opportunities for New Yorkers of All Backgrounds to Enter the Fashion Industry

NEW YORK, NY—New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) and Parsons The New School for Design today announced New York City Fashion Career Week, an opportunity for all New Yorkers interested in careers in fashion to interact with leaders in New York City’s fashion world and explore career pathways in the fashion industry. NYC Fashion Career Week will give New Yorkers of all backgrounds and at all levels of experience access to leading executives and companies in New York City’s fashion industry. The free program runs from July 17 – 21. Participating companies include Ralph Lauren, Gap, Bonobos, Theory, Saks Fifth Avenue and many more. Fashion designer and Parsons alumna Tracy Reese will deliver the keynote address. Registration is now open at the Fashion Career Week website.

"Fashion Career Week joins our robust suite of initiatives to provide knowledge and support to the next generation of fashion design and manufacturing talent," said NYCEDC President Kyle Kimball. "This new program will allow New Yorkers, no matter their level of experience, to receive opportunities in the City's fashion sector, working with top industry professionals and learning the tools they need to succeed in this thriving field."

"I’m thrilled that we’re able to partner with NYCEDC on this event," said Simon Collins, dean of the School of Fashion at Parsons. “A career in fashion is all about expressing your individuality. It’s good for the field to welcome aspirants from diverse backgrounds who see things in new ways, and who make whatever part of fashion they work in more compelling.”

“New York is the center of the universe,” said fashion designer Tracy Reese. It’s where everything happens. For fashion the resources are unbeatable, the energy is incredible and there is inspiration on every corner."

NYC Fashion Career week will provide participants with opportunities to explore fashion and retail companies throughout the City, learn about fashion careers in workshops led by Parsons faculty and industry leaders, prepare for jobs with the advice of fashion professionals via panel discussions and connect with companies and peers at Meet & Greet events.

Fashion is a $98 billion industry that employs more than 180,000 people in New York City, accounting for nearly 6 percent of the city’s workforce, paying $10.9 billion in wages and generating nearly $2 billion in tax revenue annually. New York City’s wholesale fashion market is one of the world’s largest, attracting more than 500,000 visitors per year to its trade shows, showrooms and fashion shows. Overall, the industry garners more than $18 billion in retail sales, $72 billion in wholesale sales and $8 billion in manufacturing sales annually. The city’s semi-annual Fashion Weeks draw approximately 232,000 attendees to more than 500 shows, creating a total economic impact of $865 million. NYC Fashion Career Week is one of a suite of City initiatives to sustain and grow the fashion industry, which also includes the Fashion Manufacturing Initiative, seed funding for the CFDA incubator, and other professional mentorship opportunities in design and fashion management, as well as networking and educational programs.
