As the City of New York and Amtrak embark on a master planning process to explore the future of Sunnyside Yard in Western Queens, explore the results of our first public meeting.
Community engagement and feedback play a key role in any master planning process, and they are essential to the effort for Sunnyside Yard. Members of the many surrounding communities are in a position to offer unmatched local knowledge to help shape the vision for the future of the yard. With this in mind, the City and Amtrak hosted the first of four planned public meetings for the master planning process on October 24, 2018, at LaGuardia Community College.
By the Numbers
New Yorkers who attended the planning meeting from neighborhoods surrounding the yard and beyond
Attendees took part in a variety of informational and interactive activities at six different stations, where they learned about what happens on the yard, shared opportunities and concerns about their neighborhoods, identified guiding principles for the master plan, provided feedback on topics for future meetings and activities, and more. Representatives from multiple City agencies, Amtrak, MTA, and the technical consultant team facilitated the activities and answered questions at each station.
From the session’s activities, participants identified and highlighted a few opportunities they feel the Sunnyside Yard Master Plan can and should capitalize on, including:
- Ensuring that quality of life is invested in today and improved for future generations
- Increasing access to green space, neighborhood parks, and open spaces in the community
- Meeting the need for truly affordable housing in Western Queens
- Creating good, quality jobs through the site’s programs and uses
- Reshaping the current transit system connecting Western Queens to the rest of the borough, Manhattan, and beyond
Here is the full summary of the first public meeting. The findings are being reviewed by the consultant teams to inform their analysis, shared with the Steering Committee, and used to help shape future engagement events.
